About

About the Organization

The United States Albacore Association supports Albacore Fleets and activities throughout the country. Sanctioned events run from March until October. The class association provides many of benefits including a regularly published newsletter, seminars, regattas (including regional, national, North American, and international championships), and support of local fleets. Another benefit of a strong class associations is a strong market for used boats. The United States Albacore Association is dedicated to keeping the Albacore sailing fun and affordable.

John Duncan, who began sailing the Albacore at his family cottage north of Toronto, Canada, brought his Albacore to the Washington, DC area in 1965 and set about organizing and establishing the US Albacore Association that Fall. The first US National Championship was held at Youngstown, N.Y. in 1967.

The largest Albacore fleets are found in the mid-Atlantic region from New Jersey to the Chesapeake Bay with smaller fleets and active members throughout the midwest and in southern California. New fleets are organized where three or more boat owners in an area apply for a fleet charter.

In addition to racing events the USAA sponsors training events and the annual "Fun Daze" where members meet for camping and non-racing fun in Albacores. Our main event each year is the US National Championships, usually scheduled in mid-October. This three-day event provides an opportunity for Albacore racers to participate in a friendly, yet highly competitive regatta. For more information, go to the Events page.

The Association publishes a quarterly newsletter, "Albacourier." Editor Matt Rhodes welcomes article ideas and submissions. Send information to editor [at] usaa [dot] albacore [dot] org . Matt will be on the prowl looking for article submissions, and other incriminating tidbits from the membership.
